Wings Gaming wins The International 2016

New Dota 2 champions crowned in Seattle.

The 2016 International Championships have come to an end and Wings Gaming has taken home the $9.1 million grand prize in gaming's biggest esports tournament.

The Dota 2 competition has seen plenty of upsets this year, and the final saw Wings squaring off against surprise package Digital Chaos (who despite finishing as runners up walked away with an impressive $3.4 million slice of the $20 million prize pool).

Chinese team Wings took the best-of-five final by winning three games to one, beating their North American rivals despite recently-formed DC's encouraging start to the match as they won the opening game. That, however, proved to be false dawn and Wings soon took control and went on to win the remaining three games.

The contest made for compelling viewing, and it came after a series of upsets, including DC beating last year's champions, Evil Geniuses, and favourites OG and Liquid getting knocked out of the T16 ahead of the final. The International 2016 once again returned to Seattle's KeyArena, where the event was staged for a third consecutive year.
