While Epic Games' Fortnite: Battle Royale is on everyone's lips right now, it hasn't taken off competitively as much as it's competitor PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, but the developer is looking to change all that, as they've announced some new incentives to encourage the passionate Fortnite community.
"Grab your gear, drop in and start training. Since the launch of Fortnite Battle Royale we've watched the passion for community competition grow and can't wait to empower you to battle with the best," the post reads.
"In the 2018 - 2019 season, Epic Games will provide $100,000,000 to fund prize pools for Fortnite competitions. We're getting behind competitive play in a big way, but our approach will be different - we plan to be more inclusive, and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game."
We'll be getting more details about not only the competitive structure but also eligible platform in the next few weeks, but it's safe to say this is a huge move from Epic, especially considering how much money is on the line.
The only competitions we've had so far are low-level ones at events like DreamHack, as well as a charity event by streamer Ninja, but hopefully with this funding we may see ESL events get on board as well (like with the IEM Oakland PUBG competition last year).
