With the start of the 2022 season of the Overwatch League getting ever closer, Blizzard has now shared a few details about the tier-two scene and how Overwatch Contenders will look over the course of this year.
Revealed in a new blog post, Blizzard has stated that all global Contenders competitions will be played on an early Overwatch 2 build, alike the OWL, and that the format of the scene will be changing to be open-registration rather than the the closed-league play that it formerly operated with.
With this new format in mind, Blizzard has also stated that Contenders will now use single and double-elimination brackets and that certain "top-performing Contenders teams" from the 2021 season will receive direct invites to the first event of the year.
Otherwise, as has been the case beforehand, events will be held in the same five regions: North America, Europe, China, South Korea, Australia/New Zealand, and that the first event of the year will be planned for when the Overwatch 2 PvP beta period concludes.
We're still awaiting the finer details on schedules, prizes, and the Open Division.
