Apex Legends Global Series Split 1 Playoffs will be played online

It'll use a regional competition format to deal with the surging Covid-19 Omicron variant issues.

Respawn Entertainment has made the decision to play the Apex Legends Global Series Split 1 Playoffs online, using a regional competitive format, to combat the surging Covid-19 Omicron variant problems.

According to Respawn, the event will be held in January 2022, but will now be spread among five separate online tournaments, with the top 20 teams from the regular season competing for a share of the $1 million prize pool it will boast. Likewise, this prize pool is to be divided up among the respective tournaments.

While the Split 1 Playoffs will not use an in-person format, Respawn did mention that it is intending to return to LAN competition, should that be appropriate for the Split 2 Playoffs come May.

As for the exact dates for the Split 1 Playoffs, Respawn is yet to dish out that information still, but with the Split 2 Pro League Qualifier set for January 8-9, we can assume it will be taking place beforehand.
