The Spanish football club FC Barcelona has announced its official entry into competitive League of Legends, with a team that is set to compete in the Superliga in 2022.

While the organisation has yet to officially announce a roster for its League of Legends team, with the Superliga set to return in January, we can expect to hear more about who exactly it will be fielding sooner rather than later.

As for the reason as to why Barcelona chose League of Legends as its next esport, the announcement press release stated, "On entering this tournament, FC Barcelona is strengthening their commitment to esports, a strategic sector for the Club, which they first entered two years ago with the aim of developing a strong profile."

This isn't Barcelona's first foray into esports, as the team already fields rosters in eFootball, Rocket League, and Hearthstone. With this new team, the football club is aiming to diversify its esports presence, with a mention of taking "the Barça brand to countries such as the United States of America or China."
