The question regarding the legitimacy of esports has been raging on for a while now, especially since there are suggestions it could and should be included in the Olympic Games, and now China has made a bold statement of its attitude with its Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security announcing that it considers "esports professional" as a recognised profession, as reported by Dot Esports.
That said, "account boosting" is referenced in the description of this profession as part of the job - an offence that could get you banned in many competitions. It's unclear whether this is a mistake or a miscommunication, but it's still strange to see in there.
Not all countries are of the same opinion regarding esports though, as the president of the German Olympic Sports Federation Alfons Hörmann has recently said that "esports does not exist".
The International Olympic Committee has been in talks with the industry for months now regarding the inclusion of esports in the event, including a Summit in Switzerland, and while we know violent games won't be included, the conversation is growing despite those believing it's not suitable.
Is China's attitude one you'd like to see elsewhere?
