Oxford University isn't always a name you'd associate with esports, but Reuters has reported that Chinese company Tencent has signed a trade deal with Britain to work with cultural industries, including the famous institution to host games and courses designed to promote the growth of the esports industry.
That's not all though, as working with Visit Britain they will also create a new version of its racing game QQ Speed, featuring British characters as part of the mobile game, along with costumes and music from the UK too.
This isn't the first time a university has got involved with esports in the UK, as York University recently revealed that it will be offering esports production modules, but it's pretty eye-catching to see Oxford get into esports as well, considering the weight of its reputation and the respect it has garnered globally. One can't forget about the newly-established National Students Esports body either
University esports efforts are a touch more developed in North America, however, with the University of Toronto offering esports scholarships as of last year, as well as the Overwatch League team San Francisco Shock partnering with Berkeley University this year, among countless other examples.
